How Can I Save Money on My Energy Bill?

When you see the cost of your heating or air conditioning bill, it can be startling! No one likes sticker shock, yet we like to be comfortable in our own homes. When we are too hot, we rush to the thermostat and crank the temperature down, so we can cool off quickly. When we are too cold, we want heat to get us warm. However, one look at our energy bill has us reconsidering how to save money and lower those costs.

The bigger the difference between indoor and outdoor air, the more it will cost to pay your utilities. The U.S. Department of Energy has shared some energy-saving temperatures for your home. There are also a few other things you can do that will help you get control of that energy bill!

2. Programmable Thermostat

As mentioned in the above video, a programmable thermostat allows you to set up your home for your specific schedules. It is a wonderful tool to allow you to be in complete control of your home’s temperatures at all times which will eliminate wasted energy costs such as when you are sleeping or away from your home.

3. Reduce Energy Loss

Another way, beyond a programmable thermostat, to make sure that you do not waste energy, is to check for any energy leaks. Make sure that your ductwork is insulated and sealed and that air is not escaping. Check and change your filters consistently so that your units are not working harder than they have to. Check all cracks and seals around doors and windows to make sure your heat or air is escaping.

4. Use Other Methods for Heating or Cooling

Summer:

  • Make use of fans
  • Use a dehumidifier to cool the house
  • Wear lightweight clothing
  • Keep blinds closed during the day
  • Make sure all weatherstripping seals properly
  • Eat a chilled treat
  • Stay hydrated

Winter:

  • Dress in layers, wear socks, and use blankets
  • Cover hard floor surfaces with rugs
  • Keep curtains and doors closed
  • Cook with the stove and the oven
  • Spend time upstairs — the destination for rising heat
  • Drink warm beverages
